Connections
What might be
a tiny bit bothersome is how we learn to live with the realization
that truth is only what we say it is. And increasingly, we don't
all say the same thing. You can see the effects of this growing
lack of conformity everywhere. James Burke, Forbes 10/2/00
Storytelling
Storytelling has a long tradition of connecting people to their
core beliefs to each other, to their pasts, and to their culture.
For a NECC keynote, Hilarie and six other female technologists
celebrated this tradition by creating a story circle. You can
read their stories and tell your own at Tech
Story. Check out some resources
on storytelling for reflection, learning and research.
Teacher Retention
and Technology
Using technology can improve teacher recruitment and retention,
and facilitate a cultural shift toward responsiveness and support.
Technology has been used successfully for induction, mentoring,
leadership, teacher empowerment, and collaboration. It can bridge
the support, community, information, and resource deficiencies
the “leavers” report make them stop teaching. Technology
can also bridge the time, distance, and information gaps that
prevent many schools from hiring the most qualified teachers available.
Yet there is still enormous untapped potential. Technology can
provide knowledge-creating spaces where new teachers’ perspectives
are valued by the professors who taught them, where they can simulate
the situations they will encounter, and where they can contribute
to shaping what is taught. Technology can create Oldenburg’s
third place, the “commons” that helps the whole community
of educators—professors, personnel services, principals
and practicing teachers—support those who would choose to
teach.
